Mississippi Agriculture Safety and Mental Health Awareness Coalition

“One Decision Makes a Difference”

The U.S. Department of Labor consistently lists agriculture/farm work as one of the top 10 most dangerous jobs. In addition, farmer suicides are reported to be 10 times higher than the national average in other career areas.

Not only is farm work physically demanding, but it can be mentally challenging as well.  Stress factors such as uncertain weather patterns and flooding, high or low market prices on crops, financial concerns, equipment failure or even high demand for commodities and a shortage of labor can cause problems for a farmer or rancher year after year.  Even when things are good, there is always a stressor that exists.

Many farmers and farm families tend to feel isolated because of their rural locations, and both health and mental healthcare services can be limited or nonexistent for many agriculture producers.  We want our local farmers to know that they are not alone.  One decision can make a difference in their lives, and the decision to seek help has the power to impact many lives.

We do not need more regulations to govern what happens on our farms and in our fields. We do need to do more to support and educate our agriculture family. In Mississippi, we recognize the need to promote Agriculture Safety and Mental Health Awareness within our industry.

In response to this need, MDAC, along with other state agency partners, have formed the Mississippi Agriculture Safety and Mental Health Awareness Coalition.  This coalition works to gather resources, share educational materials and promote existing programs that train, educate and advocate for agriculture safety and mental health.

Our message should be clear—YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

One decision can make a difference.  That decision should be to seek help when you need it.
